Your water heater is 9 amps. Here’s how to keep it.

At some point you gave up. The heater tripped the house once too often, so it got switched off at the wall and stayed off. Now the kettle boils water for washing.

You don’t have to live like that. You just can’t have hot water at the same time as everything else.

An electric water heater is about 2,000 watts. At 220 volts that is 9 amps — on its own.

Why it breaks a subscription

On a 5 amp line, 9 amps is not tight — it is impossible. On 10 amps it is your entire ceiling, leaving nothing for the fridge, let alone the moment the fridge starts.

So the heater has to run when there is room for it. Which, in Lebanon, means one thing.

Heat the water on city power

City power costs less and carries more. Generator hours are the constrained ones.

A tank holds its heat for hours — so you heat when the city is on, and shower long after it has gone. You are moving when it runs, not doing without.

The simplest version, free

Before buying anything: switch the heater on when the city power arrives and off an hour later. If that alone fixes your tripping, you have your answer for nothing.

The devices below only exist because nobody remembers to do it every day.

Now the part people get wrong

A water heater is a heavy, constant, heating load — the hardest thing you can ask a switch to do. It is not a lamp.

Plenty of small smart switches are rated 10 amps, and 9.1 is technically under 10. Do not do it. Running a heating load at 91% of a switch’s rating, for an hour at a time, every day, is how switches fail.

Or do it the way an electrician would

Put a contactor in the box. The contactor carries the heater’s current; the smart switch only tells it when to close.

Nothing in the chain runs near its limit, and it is the arrangement any electrician will recognise immediately.

Worth knowing before you spend

  • Check your heater’s label first. 1,500 W is 6.8 A; 3,000 W is 13.6 A. The number on yours decides the part.
  • This is wired work — not a plug-in job. An electrician, half an hour.
  • Gas heaters don’t have this problem at all. If you are replacing the heater anyway, that is worth a thought before buying any of this.
