What an automatic transfer switch actually does
It watches both supplies. When city power disappears it moves the house to the generator; when city power returns it moves back. You are not involved.
Two inputs, one output. Input 1 is city power. Input 2 is the generator. Everything downstream simply carries on.
Why the manual switch is worse than it looks
Beyond the inconvenience, a changeover flipped in a hurry, in the dark, by whoever is nearest, is how mistakes happen — and the mistake you don’t want is connecting both supplies at once.
This is the part that matters
A proper transfer switch is mechanically interlocked: it is physically incapable of joining city power and the generator together. That is the real reason to fit one, not the convenience.

A voltage protector sits behind the transfer switch and holds the power off until it is steady, on an adjustable delay.

- Fit it if the house is ever empty, if flipping it is someone’s nightly chore, or if there are stairs involved.
