It cleans the floor, then cleans itself

The Xiaomi Robot Vacuum H50 vacuums and mops in the same pass, then drives back to its dock and takes care of the part nobody enjoys: it empties its own dustbin into a 2.5-litre bag, washes the mop pads, and dries them with air so they do not sit damp between cleans. The dock bag holds up to 75 days of dust, so emptying becomes something you do every couple of months instead of every day.

Made for tiled and marble floors

Two mop pads spin as the robot moves rather than being dragged behind it, which is what actually lifts dried-on dust instead of smearing it. Ahead of them, 10,000Pa of suction pulls up the grit, sand and hair that collect fast in a Lebanese flat with the windows open. It is a sensible match for the tile and marble most homes here are floored with.

It learns the layout

LDS laser navigation maps the rooms and drives in straight lines instead of bouncing around, with obstacle detection to avoid what is left on the floor and carpet identification so it knows where the rugs are. The 5200mAh battery covers a normal flat, and the robot is 93mm tall, so it fits under most sofas and beds.

Which of the three is right for you?

• Robot Vacuum S40C — $190: 5,000Pa, vacuum and mop, laser mapping. You empty the 520ml bin and fill the 260ml tank yourself. The right pick for a smaller flat, or a first robot.
• Robot Vacuum H50 — $395 (this one): double the suction at 10,000Pa, spinning mops, and the dock does the emptying, washing and drying. The one to buy if you want to stop thinking about it.
• Robot Vacuum H50 Pro — $490: 15,000Pa, plus an extendable arm and side swing that reach into corners and along edges the round models cannot.
