Imou Cruise SC Smart Security Camera

5MP, and it can see 30 metres in the dark

The Imou Cruise SC is the straightforward pick when there is a socket where you want the camera. It records at 5MP — 2880 × 1620 — which is enough resolution that a face or a plate at the end of a driveway is still legible when you go back to the footage, rather than a smear of pixels.

Two kinds of night vision

It has both: infrared out to 30m for a picture nobody can tell is being taken, and a warm white light, also to 30m, for colour at night. Infrared gives you a clean black-and-white image in complete darkness; the warm light tells you what colour the car or the jacket actually was. Being able to choose is genuinely useful on a dark street or in a garage.

It reacts, it does not just record

Smart detection separates motion from people and vehicles, so the alerts mean something. A built-in microphone and speaker let you speak through it, and red-and-blue warning lights make it obvious the camera has noticed. The 3.6mm F1.6 lens covers 76° across with 8× digital zoom on playback.

Storage and power

Footage records to a microSD card up to 512GB, which you supply — we stock a 128GB Imou card. It runs from a DC 12V 0.5A supply and is rated −30°C to +50°C, so heat on an exposed wall is not an issue.

Which Imou camera should you buy?

• Imou Cell 3C: the only one here that runs on its own 5000mAh battery and can take an Imou solar panel. 3MP, infrared night vision to 15m, and the widest view of the three at 95°. Pick it where there is no socket.
• Imou Cruise SC (this one): mains powered, 5MP, and night vision to 30m with both warm light and infrared. The straightforward choice when power is available.
• Imou Cruiser Dual 2: two lenses at 5MP each, stitched into one view, plus Activity Zone and Crossing Line detection. For covering a wider area, or two directions at once.
